The race will be a fight to the death finish, and that’s not even the actual campaign.
The name’s Barrett Callahan. Yeah, that Barrett Callahan—the one the press dubbed “Bare” after those naked sexting pictures surfaced. At twenty-five, I was armed with an MBA from Harvard, an executive position at my father’s Fortune 500 company, a penthouse, and a different piece of delectable eye candy in my bed every weekend. I had a life most men dreamed of. But then my father decided to run for president, and my playboy lifestyle became a liability to his campaign that was built on family values. My “makeover” comes in the form of a fake fiancée who I don’t even get to choose–one who is an uptight, choirgirl acting priss but also sexy-as-hell.
My latest relationship had gone down in flames, and I was drowning in a sea of student loans when in true Godfather status, James Callahan made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. Seven figures for seven months on the campaign trail pretending to be the adoring fiancée of his son, Barrett. As soon as he won the election, our engagement would be dissolved amicably for the press, I was free to ride off into the sunset a million dollars richer, and because of the NDA, no one would be the wiser. Sure, I’d never met the guy, but I’d been a theater nerd in high school. I could pull off any role from Lady Macbeth to Maria Von Trapp. But that was before I met my fake fiancé—the infuriating, self-absorbed, egotistical, drop-dead-sexy King of the Manwhores.
Barrett Callahan and Addison Monroe couldn’t be more different, but the one thing that brings them together is the faith they have in Barrett’s father, Senator James Callahan, and his bid for the presidency, and because they believe in his platform and values, they are both willing to play pivotal roles in getting the Senator to the White House, even if it means faking an engagement for the duration of the campaign and pretending to be in love when Addison’s feminist views would never allow her to give her heart to a partying manwhore who sees women as nothing more than sex objects.
Can a philandering playboy change his ways?
Is it possible to be a one woman man with the right woman?
Can a woman who’s already been burned once take the risk of getting her heart broken again, potentially finding her running mate for life?
Katie Ashley answers these questions and more as readers witness Barrett and Addison’s tenuous partnership turn into a real friendship and the fake romance that was fabricated for voters turn into real feelings between them, but because Barrett and Addison are in close quarters all throughout the campaign trail, Addison questions the validity of what they feel for each other, and she doubts that a relationship built on lies will ever be anything but a facade for the public.
I really enjoyed Running Mate; it’s sweet, sexy, and humorous. Barrett has definitely met his match in Addison because she refuses to fall for his sexual magnetism and crass comments and just by being herself, she allows Barrett to change his views on monogamy and the type of woman he wants. Ashely paces the story quite well; she doesn’t force Barrett and Addison’s physical or emotional relationship. It happens naturally based on their close proximity and their time spent together.
Because Running Mate is from both the hero and heroine’s point of view, readers experience the highs and lows of Barrett and Addison’s burgeoning relationship and understand Addison’s trepidations in giving Barrett a real chance as well as the truth behind Barrett’s words and actions, which allows readers to cast their vote for this charming and passionate couple to make it, even before Barrett and Addison realize that their reality is so much better together than apart.
