He’s Paxton Wilder.
Twenty-two-year-old, tattooed, smoking-hot leader of the Renegades.
Five time X Games medalist.
The world is his playground—especially this year—and for the next nine months I’m stuck as his tutor on the Study at Sea program.
He’s too busy staging worldwide stunts for his documentary to get to class.
But if I can’t get him to take academics seriously, I’ll lose my scholarship…if I don’t lose my heart first.
Six unlikely friends on a nine-month cruise with the Study at Sea program will learn that chemistry is more than a subject and the best lessons aren’t taught in the classroom…but in the heart.

For two years, Leah has locked herself away, keeping her walls up in order to remain safe…to remain unafraid of things out of her control. But everything changes when her logical side gives way to a bit of adventure…when she takes a risk and finds herself tutoring a pompous, reckless Renegade, putting her trust in him and widening her boundaries with every impulsive decision she makes with him, knowing that he will keep her safe.
Paxton Wilder is an adrenalin junkie and an extreme athlete who risks his life on a regular basis in order to test the limits of his body and his abilities. But there’s one part of him he’s not willing to risk after he crash and burned the first time and that’s his heart. Paxton has never seen the positive effects of love and so his distorted view based on a number of examples leaves him chasing the next big thrill, knowing that living life wildly and freely is the only way to live.
Leah Baxter and Paxton Wilder couldn’t be any more different; they’re polar opposites in so many ways, but it’s those differences that allow them to feel grounded as well as have the courage to take risks in life, in love, and in the once in a lifetime experience that they find themselves embarking on when they step foot on the Athena and begin their year of college at sea.
The attraction and chemistry between Paxton and Leah is evident from their first glance at each other, but both of them feel the need to keep their distance because that’s the only way they can maintain control…they can complete their own agendas. Too bad the pull between them overpowers their plans because regardless of how untouchable they should be, there’s no keeping them apart, especially when Paxton decides that Leah’s his new objective and he never backs down from a challenge.
Paxton and Leah’s story is not just about them being a couple, though, which makes Wilder that much better. Readers are privy to both Paxton and Leah’s every thought as they try to come to terms with what they want from each other. They both have secrets and scars to deal with, and it’s clear that the end result could be drastically different from what they truly desire if they don’t unveil the truth and learn from their pasts.
Paxton Wilder is an incredibly dynamic character who seems to be two different people depending on his audience. To his friends and loved ones, he’s Paxton; a man whose loyalty is solid and whose personality is endearing. To the public, he’s Wilder; a magnetic man whose risky behavior and death defying stunts make him a celebrity with a multitude of fans. But with Leah, he’s both, which truly indicates the power that she has over Paxton and his willingness to show her every side of him, even if parts of who he is scares the hell out of her.
Rebecca Yarros does a fantastic job of showcasing Leah’s growth throughout the story. Two years ago, her life drastically changed and that incident molded her into a much different person than who she was. But as the book continues, readers witness Leah letting go…chasing a bit of the freedom that she used to feel, and it’s exhilarating as well as terrifying for both Leah and readers because the end result may leave her more broken than she already is due to the intense feelings that Paxton brings out of Leah, but it also makes clear that existing is not actually living and with Paxton, she feels more alive than she ever has.
If readers are ready for an adventure that is full of extremes then Rebecca Yarros’ newest release, Wilder, is the book to pick up because not only does it have fantastic characters and an intriguing storyline, but it also allows readers to understand the difference between being alive and actually living, and by illustrating that concept, we realize that taking risks and testing limits gives us the freedom to truly experience life in an amazing and life changing way!
